2020 #75-UP CLOSE & PERSONAL w/ AUTHOR APRIL HARPER

My name is April Harper, born in Akron Ohio. I knew at an early age that no matter what it was that I
decided to do in life, I had to “feel” it. I spent a lot of my life like any other person. Trying to figure out
my place in this world. I have always been an advocate for compassion, understanding, and love. I
married a man who is brave enough to ride this rollercoaster with me with his eyes open. Together
settled in Austin, Texas and created an amazing blended family starring nine of the most eclectic
characters I have ever had the pleasure to be around. Following in my family’s tradition, I spent eight
years in the military, serving my country in the medical field, but it was not quite my calling. I entered
the Apartment Management field, specializing in an area I found was important to me, Affordable
Housing. It was there that I was given the opportunity to “feel” my community and its true joys and
struggles. After ten years of assisting families with gaining substantial housing, I turned my attention on
some of the other struggles I see in my community and hope to shed light on those issues through my
writing. When I am not writing or hanging out with my children or husband, I can be found volunteering
my services as a Public Notary for veterans and low -income households, watching movies and trying not
to cheat on my diet.

2020 #73-UP CLOSE & PERSONAL W/ AUTHOR Collette Scandrett

Collette is a 34-year old African-American writer and avid music lover. She was born in
Washington, D.C. but raised in Columbia, SC. For those who don't know her she is a bit of a tv
junkie. Most shows from the late 1990s and early 2000s she has seen and can probably name
most of the main characters. She started writing when she was in high school but further refined
and developed her passion while attending college. She found that she has a tendency to write
about what she is feeling in that moment in the way of poetry but she is currently working on
finishing a novel that is more reminiscent of a memoir.
She is an alumna of Devry University (bachelor's degree), has a master’s degree from Purdue
Global, and is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program at Walden University. All of the post
graduate work completed was with a concentration in Criminal Justice. She is currently on the
journey of trying to introduce her works to all that would find interest. Her love for writing
started in the 8 th  grade after reading some poetry by Maya Angelou. Since reading her words, she
discovered her own poetic voice. In the 9 th  grade, her English teacher required that every student
write their own anthology. This only further sparked her love for writing and confidence in her
literary voice.
She has self-published two poetry books (Is Life Worth Living and The Pain That Never Ends)
on Amazon covering numerous topics that are experienced in life. The first book follows from
the beginning of life to the end and some things that are experienced during those times. The
second book is a book that deals with some of the harder times that she faced in life. The novel
she is currently working on, Journal of Abuse, shows the many different experiences she had
with abuse and depression, including the abusive and self-destructive patterns experienced
during those times.

She has an author page on Amazon as well as a work in progress author page on Facebook.

2020 #64-UP CLOSE & PERSONAL W/ AUTHOR Damien ' 'Toppnotch" Hodges

“ToppNotch”, prolific writer and ambitious entrepreneur. Destined to become the next name in Urban Literature.

With so many authors in the literary industry emerging from various parts of the world, what sets them apart from each other? Authenticity, dedication to the craft, motivation and persistence. These are the indicators of a phenomenon and a few of the distinct characteristics that put Toppnotch in a category of his own. ‘I write to paint a vivid picture of the reality I come from and the adversities we challenge to succeed.’ His name exemplifies a hierarchy within the entertainment industry that can't be reached by many.

Born and raised in Chicago, IL. surrounded by the notoriously known Cabrini Green Projects, Damien ' 'Toppnotch" Hodges fought to not become a victim of his circumstances. His recurring visions while being entrenched in that environment were drug dealing, gang violence, high profile murders and senseless killings. It was during the late 1980's when sports, music and writing began to camouflage the harsh realities of his neighborhood. Toppnotch's love for creative expression flourished due to the fine arts school he thrived in and his introduction to local rap group T. S.P. Through his development in writing raps and short stories, Toppnotch started to capture the images of his surroundings and wanted the world to know of their existence. Proclaimed 'Da Ambassador of the Lower Northside", Toppnotch provides the perfect depiction of inner city living and the circumstances of the lives within. The road to stardom has been very difficult for Toppnotch. There's been many obstacles placed in his path that made becoming an author a mere dream.

After years of being Vice President of the independent record label, Gotta E. A. T Records and promoting events with Payola Inc., Toppnotch came to San Diego, CA to pursue his brand of entertainment but caught a case. While battling for his life in the California judicial system, Toppnotch wrote his second novel and first in the ``Blinded By The Lights" trilogy series in the midst of the turmoil. Writing from his experiences, he penned an epic story of the power of friendship, the misconceptions and business of the music industry and the lengths people would go to obtain fame.

After many rejected manuscripts, he signed with TMA and in 2017 he released his debut novel, "To Live With No One To Love." Encouraged by his writing mentor Thomas Habersham (Author of "Circle of Death"), he took up a correspondence course with Stratford Career Institute and after obtaining his Creative Writing Diploma, he signed his first traditional contract alongside the Urban face who had inspired him as a juvenile. He hopes to deliver a positive message to his generation in a way that they'll receive, and to prove without contradiction that #URBANAINTDEAD "

Writing was never my dream. I just found myself at a point in my life where it was all I had," he says. "The sky was the limit, and I reached for it." Elijah R. Freeman is working hard on two trilogies and is planning the release of his first anthology, "Tales 4rm Da Dale."

2020 #61-UP CLOSE & PERSONAL W/ AUTHOR Joseph E. Dames, III

Joseph E. Dames, III also known by his nickname, Junior Man, was born in
Stuart, FL. Most of his youth was spent as a hard-headed, rebellious man-
child trying to navigate the urban streets of St. Petersburg, FL where he grew up.
At the age of seventeen, after a life-shattering event, that left him
standing before a Pinellas County judge who pronounced a sentence of
25 years to life, he was forced to let go of his youth and freedom.
While in prison, he, with the encouragement and support of others, dug his
way out of a pit of darkness and despair by seeking and gaining wisdom,
knowledge, and understanding that assisted in his transformation from
man-child to the successful business owner and entrepreneur he is today.
Now, while living a life of abundant grace and with a committed and
determined desire to help deter the neighborhood youth from traveling
the path of destruction he once traveled, Junior Man has a personal
mission to “save the children.”
The author uses his past mistakes to encourage others to think before making choices
and decisions that can alter their life. He transparently opens up about a tragic situation
that shifted the trajectory of his life, and shares how his experience being incarcerated
molded him into a better version of himself.
