Tree reimagines the rich history of four African-American families as old as trees. Vera the narrator and school teacher describes relatives throughout the book. Although set in 1800 there is no concept of slavery and the main cash crop is the cannabis plant. Food and cannabis plants are a big part of these families' gatherings and celebrations, as well as Vera's daughter-n-law, Alex's pecan pie. Hillis Hills, Georgia is a thriving little town where there is a schoolhouse, doctor's office, blacksmith shop, hotel, bank, railroad company, jailhouse and so forth.
